John Sauer Inducted into William & Mary Athletics Hall of Fame

Lead: John Sauer, former Director of Speed, Strength and Conditioning at the College of William & Mary for 31 years, was inducted into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame in Williamsburg on September 18, 2025, honoring his transformative impact on the Tribe’s strength and conditioning programs.

Hall of Fame Honor
William & Mary President Katherine A. Rowe and Director of Athletics Brian Mann officially welcomed Sauer into the Hall of Fame at a ceremony held at the university’s new strength training complex. Sauer will return to Williamsburg for induction festivities from September 18-20, with the formal ceremony on September 19.
Career Highlights
- Served as Director of Speed, Strength and Conditioning at William & Mary from 1988 to 2019, following stops at Clemson, Utah and Southern Methodist.
- Oversaw expansion of the original 2,000-square-foot weight room into an 8,000-square-foot facility named in part for him, featuring 22 weight stations and video-display monitors for workout routines.
- Produced at least one football player with All-America strength honors for 30 consecutive seasons.
- Coached 40 former Tribe football players to professional opportunities, including 35 NFL participants and nine NFL draft picks.
- Awarded the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s CAA Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year (1996-1998).
- Holds certifications from six national strength and conditioning associations and remains active in professional coaching networks.
Induction Ceremony
The Hall of Fame induction will culminate on Friday, September 19, with remarks from university and Athletics Hall of Fame representatives. Sauer’s return to campus marks a celebration of his legacy in advancing William & Mary’s athletic programs and student-athlete development.
