Johnny Appleseed Festival Kicks Off in Lisbon with Historic Parade, Apple Contests

Today, the 57th Annual Johnny Appleseed Festival opened in downtown Lisbon, Ohio, featuring a lively parade, pioneer-era demonstrations, and apple-themed competitions.

The two-day event honors the legacy of frontier nurseryman John “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman by immersing visitors in 19th-century crafts, foods, and family activities, drawing community members and tourists alike to support local organizations.

Festival Highlights

• A colorful parade through Lisbon’s Main Street set the celebratory tone for the weekend.
• Artisans demonstrated tinsmithing, blacksmithing, yarn spinning and apple pressing, recreating authentic 1840s-era trades.
• Over 30 food and craft vendors offered apple butter, fritters, dumplings, ice cream and other apple-inspired treats-and long-time favorites competed in the annual apple pie and beard contests.
• At noon on the main stage, the crowning of Little Miss Apple Blossom and Little Mister Apple Bud took place following the parade ceremonies.

Community and Family Fun

Attendees explored interactive history exhibits, a 1950s auto and motorcycle show, a dunk tank and kid-friendly games. Local schools, churches and nonprofit groups used their booths as fundraisers, reinforcing the festival’s role in strengthening community bonds and supporting area organizations.

Practical Information

Admission is free and runs until 6 PM today, with activities resuming at 10 AM Sunday. Visitors are encouraged to sample apple-themed concessions and join contests throughout the weekend.
