Today, Saturday, September 20, 2025, Metro is replacing Red Line trains with free shuttle buses between Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue stations from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., as crews perform essential tie replacement and maintenance work.

Weekend track work underpins service changes To maintain safety and infrastructure integrity, Metro crews are replacing worn crossties on the Red Line. Passengers traveling between Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue must use shuttle buses, while trains continue running normally on other segments.

Service Changes

  • Shuttle Buses: Available every 8-10 minutes between Union Station and Rhode Island Ave from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.
  • NoMa-Gallaudet U Closure: Station remains closed; riders may board at Gallery Place for faster service.
  • Red Line Trains: Continue running between Shady Grove and Union Station every 8 minutes (day) and every 10 minutes (evening). Between Rhode Island Ave and Glenmont, trains operate at normal frequencies.
  • Other Lines: Blue, Yellow, Green lines operate normally; Orange Line trains run every 18 minutes; Silver Line runs every 12 minutes (day) and every 15 minutes (evening), with no service to New Carrollton.

  • Tie Replacement: Teams are swapping out worn wooden crossties on the lower Red Line segment to improve track stability.
