US Open Mixed Doubles: Defending Champions Advance as Star Pairings Shine

August 19, 2025 | Flushing Meadows, New York

Defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori kept winning. They moved on to the semi-finals with a straight-sets win over Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, 4-2, 4-2.

Earlier on Tuesday’s opening day:

  • Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti defeated former Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Gaël Monfils, 5-3, 4-2. They will now move on to the quarter-finals.
  • Third seeds Iga Świątek and Casper Ruud beat Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys, 4-1, 4-2. They finished in just 39 minutes, staying on track for the $1 million title.
  • Andrey Rublev and Karolína Muchová stopped Venus Williams’s return, beating her and Reilly Opelka, 4-2, 5-4(7-4). The legendary American lost in the opening round.

The new format features best-of-three short sets to four games, no-advantage scoring, and a 10-point tiebreak in place of a third set. Fans are intrigued, while players have mixed feelings. Still, this change has led to a thrilling, star-filled spectacle. Errani and Vavassori got a wild card this year. They will play against Rublev and Muchová in the semi-final on Wednesday. Also, Świątek and Ruud will face McNally and Musetti. The first team to win back-to-back mixed doubles titles in the new US Open format will get $1 million and Grand Slam recognition.
